Functions

1. Conducting in-service training programmes for teachers teaching English as a second language at the primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.
2. Organizing need based programmes for the learners who need English for specific purposes.
3. Organising seminars ,conferences, workshops and meetings for English teachers, administrative officers and policy makers.
4. Undertaking , promoting and coordinating research in ELT and Linguistics.
5. Developing instructional materials at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels of instruction in English.
6. Providing consultancy service to the State Government and other organisations.
7. Providing academic and professional guidance.

Objectives

1. Promoting teaching and learning English Language in Assam.
2. Training teachers in English.
3. Improving syllabus, textbook, examination systems and related matters in English in Assam.

ELTIA conducts various ELT programmes for the teachers of English of lower primary, upper primary and secondary schools of Assam. It also conducts refresher course for the subject teachers of English of Assam on request. The programmes conducted by ELTIA are-

ELTIA conducts courses of various duration. The programmes of long duration are-

1. Three month Diploma Course in ELT
2. One month certificate course in ELT
3. Short term In Service Training Programme in ELT at ELTI,Assam and in rural and tribal areas of Assam

Besides training programmes, ELTI, Assam undertakes research projects in the field of Linguistics and English Language Teaching. It also offers consultancy service to different Private and Public sector organizations in the areas of human resource development and ELT.
