English Language Teaching Institute, Assam (ELTIA) is a premier institute of Assam in the field of English Teacher Training. It is situated in Kahilipara, Guwahati-781019. It receives financial assistance from Govt. of Assam as Grants in Aid to pay the salary of its employees and to meet the expenditure of OE, TE and house rent. It received financial assistance from the ministry of Human Resource Development, Languages Division till 2008 to conduct in service teacher training programme. When MHRD stopped sponsoring the ELTI Support Scheme in 2008 under which ELTI, Assam had received the financial assistance to conduct teacher training programme the EFLU, Hyderabad started to provide the grants in aid to continue conducting the training programmes.

The Board of Governors constituted by the Govt. of Assam looks after the overall administration of the Institute. The Commissioner and Secretary, Elementary Education Department, Govt of Assam is the Chairman and the VC of the English and Foreign Languages University, dignitaries from the Government and Statutory Bodies in charge of formal education in the state are the members of the Board. The Director of the institute is the member secretary.

ELTIA conducts various ELT programmes for the teachers of English of lower primary, upper primary and secondary schools of Assam. It also conducts refresher course for the subject teachers of English of Assam on request. The programmes conducted by ELTIA are-

Our academic matters are monitored by the English and Foreign Languages University (the EFLU, Hyderabad) .The teachers attending the training programmes get stipend and T.A. according to ELTI Support Scheme Guideline and ELTI, Assam norms. ELTIA has a specialized library rich in books on Linguistics, Methodology, ELT and English literature. The library has a good collection of Dictionaries and encyclopaedia. It is considered to be one of the best libraries in the State in the field of ELT.

We work in collaboration with the EFLU, Hyderabad, SCERT, Assam, SEBA, AHSEC, SSA, Assam, RMSA, Assam, Regional English Language Office, US Embassy (RELO), British Council and Teachers Associations at the District and Block level to conduct teacher training programmes, prepare materials for training programmes, prepare textbooks and other teaching learning materials, translate materials from English to other languages and to English from other languages. We are the member of different committees, boards constituted for English teaching learning by the Govt. of Assam and other statutory bodies in charge of formal education in Assam.
